Terminator has been given yet another chance to revive this tired and terrible franchise with a brand new film having just been announced. Yes that’s correct and frankly besides money I honestly don’t know why. I suppose it may have something to do with James Cameron returning and bringing in Deadpool director Tim Miller. Apparently Cameron is ‘godfathering’ the project which I assume means he’s the Executive Producer and will have a lot of creative control.
Cameron regains the rights to the Terminator franchise in 2019 so it’ll be a while until we see anything, plus he’s got those four (why four?!) Avatar sequels to work on in the mean time.
David Ellison of Skydance productions is said to be financing the project which includes finding a science fiction author who can come up with a plausible story. Ellison still holds a lot of the rights to Terminator which he bought from his sister, Megan Ellison who is over at Annapurna. She bought them in 2011 in Cannes for $20 million.
At the moment no one is saying if the plan is to be a reboot, a continuation or whether it’ll ignore certain franchise ruining films entirely but Miller is set to direct whatever screenplay is given to him. Let’s hope it’s at least kind of decent and doesn’t give away plot twists in the trailer. Thank you Genisys.
Keep. It. Reel.
