Super Bowl TV Spot Round-up

Every year two teams get together for a game of American football which fans of the sport watch all around the world. Why? Well, because you get new footage from amazing films, that’s why!

Gather round people, here are the best TV spots released during last night’s Super Bowl LIII including the likes of Avengers: Endgame, Toy Story 4, Captain Marvel and Us. Fun fact, Jordan Peele appears two of the spots and directed one of the others, so I think we can all agree he’s the real winner, right?? Who actually won? Erm… *Googles Super Bowl* someone called Pat Riots. He sounds like he needs to calm down. Anyway, here are some kickass TV spots to get you excited for some of the upcoming films and TV shows being released this year.

Avengers Endgame

After the first trailer in which Tony is drifting in space whilst a plan on earth is about to be executed,m we see Stark and Nebula working on what I’m assuming is a way back home. Shots of the team getting ready as Black Widow trains and Cap seemingly has his shield once more. Chances are this is it for the original line up of the Avengers. They will be going out with a bang.

Captain Marvel

Coming a month and half before Endgame, the MCU has its first ever female lead film with Brie Larson taking on the role of Captain Marvel. Watch as she goes higher, further and faster. Try to keep up.

Toy Story 4

Bo Peep returns in this spot for Toy Story 4 in which she and Woody are waiting for Buzz however he’s been caught and is now a prize at an amusement park game. Trying to escape Buzz is quick to make enemies in Bunny and Ducky. Good luck with that!

Handmaid’s Tale

The third season of The Handmaid’s Tale is coming with Offred/June on a mission after managing to escape at the end of the second season. Check out the explosive spot, and sorry for the spoiler!

Twilight Zone

That’s right, it’s coming back. Jordan Peele nareayea and produces the latest iteration of the famed TV series which has spooked people for decades. Admittedly I’ve never seen any of these but they sound so fantastic so I’m curious to see how it’s handled this time.

Hanna

Based on the film of the same name Hanna shows how you can stretch an hour and 51 minute film into an entire series. I’m being quite cynical about this because I personally thought the film was excellent, whereas this looks as if it’s just copied it. I will reserve full judgement until after I’ve seen it but still…

Fast & Furious presents: Hobbs & Shaw

If you saw the trailer which came out a few days ago, this isn’t anything new but certainly worth a watch because it has to be one of the most self aware and hilarious trailers I’ve seen in a long time! Hobbs & Shaw being forced to team just to perform some ridiculous feats is border line genius! Very excited for some big dumb fun.

US

In his follow up to Get Out, Jordan Peele takes a seemingly basic trope with a family taking a trip and some unwanted visitors. However as you can imagine it’s not as simple as that. This looks, frankly, fucking terrifying! I’m looking forward to what Peele has in store for everyone this time around.

Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark

Yes, that really is the title. And yes there are three. How greedy of them right?? From Guillermo del Toro (no he didn’t direct it, he wrote and produced it, so that’s something) comes a new horror story about a group of kids who have to face theirs fears in order to save their hometown. It’s a pretty frightening set of spots, check them out and see what you think.

Game of Thrones

Sorry about that, no new footage at all but an advert for Bud Light with a hint of Game of Thrones thrown it. Don’t get me wrong I would have LOVED to have seen some sort of trailer for the final season but this is a pretty fun way to promote both.

Keep. It. Reel.

Captain Marvel Trailer Swoops In

It’s the next film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and it’s the first ever female-lead Marvel movie in the current iteration of this set of comicbook movies. Captain Marvel comes in hot with it’s first trailer and it’s pretty good. Check it out below.

As with other MCU trailers, we’ve not been given that much, essentially this is an extension on the images we’ve already seen here but with a bit more context. Starring Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, she’s joined by Gemma Chan, Jude Law, Samuel L. Jackson, Lee Pace, Ben Mendlesohn and Clark Gregg, the plot revolves around the origins of Carol Danvers. Keeping with the comicbook character, she begins as a pilot before she’s granted with superpowers as Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. One of the alien races includes the Skrulls, a shape-shifting group who can look like anyone so therefore could actually be part of the current universe. Oooooooooooooo!

This is the 21st film in the MCU, which means it’s taken 20 movies and now 11 years for their first ever female-lead movie. It’s about fucking time Marvel! COME ON! We want more of this, especially when they are as awesome as Brie Larson and EVERY WOMAN in Black Panther. Here’s hoping we get to see more of this in the future. Captain Marvel is due for release in March 2019.

Keep. It. Reel.

Captain Marvel Images Land

At the moment we are in the tenth year of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in which they have recently had their 20th film released, that being Ant-Man and the Wasp. And now the MCU is growing in an even bigger way with next year’s introduction of Captain Marvel whose solo film is out in March.

Brie Larson takes on the title role of a character who has been said to be the MCU’s most powerful Avenger. What she can do and how she becomes this mighty being is yet to be seen, will they use the comic book origins of this famed force or go down a different path? Who knows! (Well, I’m guessing those at Marvel know but they aren’t going to tell us now are they??)

In the images we see Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel in her full costume as well as where she begins as a pilot, along with an image in which she stands side by side with Jude Law whose character is Walter Lawson aka Mar-Vell. We see the return of Ronan who is once again being played by Lee Pace. The character became the primary villain in Guardians of the Galaxy, so it’ll be interesting see how he fits in.

Samuel L Jackson’s Nick Fury makes an appearance with two eyes, presumably we’ll see how he loses one, perhaps after trusting someone. We’re also seeing the Skrulls for the first time who are an alien looking shapeshifting race and it’s being said that part of the MCU could be Skrulls due to their abilities to change their appearance that much. Interesting.

So lots to go on and to keep you going until the trailer drops hopefully soon. Anyway, without further ado here’s Captain Marvel in all her wonderful glory.

Keep. It. Reel.

Weekly Round-Up: 15th July, 2018

So, this is a bit later than normal. To be fair I was relaxing on Sunday and time just got away from me. Yes I was being lazy… I was going to mention the World Cup and England but it seems redundant now after France won it yesterday. Congratulations by the way.

Anyway, this has been a great week for creepy posters (hello Winnie you weirdo), getting our first look at Glass, an exciting BFI London Film Festival announcement and yours truly received a history lesson. Apparently I don’t know everything.

Trailers and Posters

The Favourite

Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz star in The Favourite, the latest offering from Yorgos Lanthimos. An unstable Queen Anne (Colman) sits on the throne whilst her friend Lady Sarah (Weisz) starts to bond with a new servant Abigail (Stone). It looks as odd as you’d expect from Lanthimos.

Orange is the New Black

Orange is the New Black isn’t just the current President, it’s also a damn good TV show. Although I’m a few seasons behind, I’d love to catch up! Here’s a new poster and trailer for the upcoming sixth season

Christopher Robin

Creepy in the trailer and creepy in the posters. Say what you want, these characters look freaking weird! Check out the new trailer and character posters for Christopher Robin.

Life Itself

Life Itself tells the story of a couple who after meeting at college, get married and have a baby. Their life and relationship creates events which echo across the world. Starring Oscar Isaac, Olivia Cooke, Mandy Patinkin, Olivia Wilde, Antonio Banderas and Annette Bening.

Castle Rock

More of Stephen King’s writing is getting it’s own adaptation. This time it’s Castle Rock, a fictional town in which strange things start to happen after a young man shows up at Shawshank prison

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

The (potentially pointless) reboot of Sabrina aka Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, has an eerie new poster in which Salem takes centre stage. Why? Not a clue! Coming to Netflix in 2018 and a trailer is landing at this year’s SDCC.

The Miseducation of Cameron Post

Coming from it’s success at Sundance The Miseducation of Cameron Post has an official trailer. Showing an oppressed young girl who is forced in gay conversion therapy

Mary Queen of Scots

Mary Queen of Scots has a couple of character posters which have a grainy painted effect. Nice! Starring Margot Robbie and Saoirse Ronan it tells the story of how Mary Stuart attempts to overthrow her cousin Elizabeth I and is condemned to prison. (My knowledge of history is terrible normally but I nicked this from IMDB ) There’s also a trailer which looks pretty good but I’m feeling a bit meh about this film…

The Meg is about to have a furry snack, not the dog you bastard! Why would you do that?! 🐶🦈

News

Captain Marvel

It was confirmed this week by none other than Brie Larson that they have wrapped on Captain Marvel. Exciting times for the 21st MCU movie which is out on March next year, JUST before Avengers 4. This will be the first MCU movie which has been fronted by a female lead character and after 10 years it’s about time.

The Predator

A couple of new images of the upcoming new Predator film, showing off some new hardcore armour. Starring Boyd Holbrook, Olivia Munn, Sterling K Brown, this rebooted version will be out in September

Lando Calrissian Returns In Episode IX

It seems the unanswered question of where the hell is Lando is finally being answered after it was announced that Billie Dean Williams is returning as the charismatic character in 2019’s Star Wars: Episode IX. More on it here.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

A new image from Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald has been released. Here’s Newt Scamander in all his glory, I hope this is better than the last one which, let’s be honest, was pretty average…

Birds of Prey

I must have missed this but there’s yet another Harley Quinn movie in production, this one is called Birds of Prey and will be directed by Cathy Yan. To sum up there’s this, Gotham City Sirens, Suicide Squad 2 and a Joker/Harley Quinn movie (plus other non Harley Quinn films) all in the works. Seems a bit much DC!

Robocop Returns

Neill Blomkamp is making a return to the big screen after 2015’s Chappie with Robocop Returns, a sequel to the 1987 original. *sigh* how about we do something original instead??

Shazam

The first official image of the utterly ridiculous looking Shazam . I mean, really?? 😂

Glass

A few brightly coloured images have been released for Glass, the sequel by M. Night Shyamalan which merges Unbreakable and Split into one. A bizarre concept which feels like it could just work. Starring Bruce Willis, Samuel L Jackson, James McAvoy, Anya Taylor-Joy and Sarah Paulson

Black Widow

Cate Shortland has been picked from a long list of directors (apparently it was about 70 ) to helm the solo Black Widow movie. Traditionally an indie filmmaker, it’s great to see a big budget film go to her. Looking forward to see what they will do with this

Godzilla: King of Monsters.

The first images for Godzilla: King of Monsters have been released and it looks like he’s got a bit of bad breathe… Starring Millie Bobby Brown, Vera Farmiga, Bradley Whitford, Sally Hawkins, Kyle Chandler and Charles Dance, the next in the monster franchise is out in 2019

Widows

After being announced as the opening film of BFI London Film Festival, here’s a new image from Widows. Directed by Steve McQueen the film is out in November.

A Downton Abbey

A Downton Abbey movie has been confirmed by Hugh Boneville’s Instagram account. The script has been written by Julian Fellowes and will be directed by Brian Percival who helmed the Downton Abbey pilot. Out in 2019, this should class the cinemas up a bit

Mini Review: Skyscraper

Starring Dwayne Johnson, Neve Campbell, Chin Han, Noah Taylor

A man is framed for causing a life threatening fire in the world’s tallest building. He must battle against the odds in order to clear his name and save his family.

Thanks to Dwayne Johnson and the outrageous stunts he pulls off during the film, Skyscraper is exactly what you expect it to be. It has a pretty thin plot with characters who are never fully fleshed out but it’s so much mindless fun, you won’t care about that. With action sequences that’ll make you feel and wince, Skyscraper is the dumb summer film we’ve been waiting for.

3 out of 5.

Keep It. Reel.
