Danny Boyle Exits Bond 25

In incredibly frustrating and annoying news, it’s been announced that Danny Boyle has left James Bond 25 due to, that old chestnut, creative differences.

Being announced by Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli via the official James Bond Twitter, they have said that he has left today but when the decision was made is anyone’s guess. The 25th film in the franchise and what is set to be Daniel Craig’s fifth and final go as 007 is as of yet untitled is still due for release on October 25th, 2019 with production scheduled for early December at Pinewood. Boyle came on board in May after months of speculation regarding who would be taking over from Sam Mendes.

Director of films including Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire, The Beach and 127 hours, it’s thought that the prolific filmmaker would bring something new to the franchise which can sometimes seem a tad dated.

On a personal note, I’m utterly gutted. I can’t tell you how much I was looking forward to a Boyle directed Bond film. Yes they are old school and they need some updating, who better than one of the best British directors of all time? I’m unsure where it’s going to go or what will happen next but I hope they have someone else great in mind.

Either way I hope this hasn’t shaken or stirred Boyle up too much and that he’ll be back behind the camera in no time.

Danny Boyle Confirmed For Bond 25

Rumours were flying around regarding who the next James Bond would be then when Daniel Craig finally confirmed he’ll be having one more go at the role, speculation went wild about the director for Bond 25. Whilst he was being talked about and considered, it’s been left until today to confirm Danny Boyle as the director of the 25th James Bond film.

Boyle has been said to be developing a script with John Hodge with whom he regularly collaborates. However it didn’t seem likely due to another project, said to be a musical with Richard Curtis, being in development at the same time. The apparently final outing for Craig will be his fifth time as the title character, which will surpass Pierce Brosnan’s four films but not quite match up to the 7 a piece for Roger Moore and Sean Connery. 

“We are delighted to announce that the exceptionally talented Danny Boyle will be directing Daniel Craig in his fifth outing as James Bond in the 25th installment of the franchise,” said EON Productions’ Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli in a statement. “We will begin shooting Bond 25 at Pinewood Studios in December with our partners at MGM and are thrilled that Universal will be our international distributor.” With production beginning at the end of this year, the release has been pinned down to  October 25th 2019 release date for the UK and November for the USA.

The week in news: November 28th 2016

So much news. Very little time. A week to be exact. With any luck this will be a regular feature every week on either Sunday or Monday where I round up a bunch of news, just in case you’ve missed anything. Yes, I can be THIS nice. As well as these regular news updates, I’ve got a few new bits coming in the new year which I’m hoping will become regular features. Stay tuned. In the mean time, let’s get this started.

Cars 3

And we begin with Cars 3 trailer. This is without question the least Pixar the Cars movies has ever looked. A very gritty, off-kilter, shocking and a greyish trailer which comes with a message: From this moment everything will change. What does that mean? Are they destroying Cars as we know it? Will people actually like this one? (I’ve not seen either of them so I can’t comment but apparently Cars and Cars 2 sucks.) Has the colour been turned down for good? No-one knows but we will certainly find out in 2017.

John Boyega in Pacific Rim: Maelstrom 

We’ve just seen John Boyega featuring in a new image from Pacific Rim 2. It was announced a while ago that he was part of the sequel, he then released a photo to show us the title which is Pacific Rim: Maelstrom. And that’s it. That’s pretty much all we know (without reading more about it to avoid spoilers) however I do hope that we’ll see more dumb awesomeness with even more massive robots punching massive monsters!

Release of Rogue One tickets

They are out people! This is not a drill! I’ve booked my ticket to watch it on the 17th December. I’m very excited, I love the idea for this film and it look great from the trailers. Rogue One this year, Episode VIII in 2017, Han Solo movie in 2018, Episode IX in 2019 and another spin-off in 2019. So much to look forward to if you’re a Star Wars fan, which I wasn’t a while ago. Deadpool 2 director announced

Director of Deadpool 2 announced as  David Leitch, who is the man behind 2014’s John Wick starring Keanu Reeves. This is going to be a challenge for Leitch. First of all, John Wick was very successful, enough to make a sequel in fact, however it was dark, there wasn’t much humour in it. But the action scenes were superbly choreographed and the entire film was well directed. It’s an interesting choice after Tim Miller departed due to creative differences (there are lots of rumours, related to budget constrictions, disagreeing on who to cast as Cable and so on) but it’ll be a good one that’s for a sure.

Emilia Clarke in Han Solo movie

That’s it. This is all we know. She’s paying the female leads apparently and that’s it. I think it’s a good move for Clarke to go into such a major franchise considering her work besides Game of Thrones hasn’t exactly been strong. Time will tell, this is going to be the second spin-off for Star Wars with many more planned especially as they have recently announced that after Episode IX, there will be no more Episode films. It makes sense, there’s only so far a story can go and there are plenty of other ideas to be explored.

Can you imagine working on something for 28 years, finishing it off and then releasing it to the world? Well this is exactly what the film Silence is to Martin Scorsese. The trailer for his epic new film, starring Adam Driver, Andrew Garfield and Liam Neeson has finally been released. Check out what all the fuss is about right here. They also released a poster, looking forward to this.

Sherlock Season 4 images

We’ve seen the trailer, now check out these images! Yeah okay, they aren’t that great but frankly I very eager to see what they have planned for this set of episodes which might be the end of Sherlock. It certainly needs to end. Season 3 was good but not as good as 1 and 2, plus the main duo are constantly busy with other films and stage performances. It all beings again on January 1st 2017. This is what he doe best. Good character acting. I love the look of this film, it looks charming, funny and warm, plus the role of DeNiro’s character seems to be a much stronger one than he’s played recently (all I will say is Dirty Grandpa). Check out the trailer below.

Coming soon to Secret Cinema: 28 Days Later

For the first time ever, Secret Cinema is stepping into the world of horror with their project of Danny Boyle’s 2002 epic, 28 Day Later. The post-apocalyptic movie, which has been often attributed with the reinvigoration of the zombie horror movie sub-genre, will be shown at a secret in London as well as one other city.

The film shows us what life in London would be like if the zombie apocalypse took place and it’s a pretty quiet place! We meet Jim, who is a survivor of the events that have changed London forever. Waking up by himself in a hospital, he finds a group of other survivors and they have to battle against several elements in order to stay alive.

Andrew Macdonald, producer of 28 days later said: “Secret Cinema never fails to amaze with their experiences, and its exciting to see them tackle their first ever horror. London prepare.”

The move into the horror genre is a brand new step for Secret Cinema and could open up doors to other horror films, genres and franchises in the coming years. I’m a huge fan of this film and for it to get the Secret Cinema treatment, it’s going to be spectacular. If you have ever been to any of their previous events including the most recent Back to the Future and Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, you’ll know the amount of effort they put into bringing these iconic movies to life.

London Film Festival: Steve Jobs, review

Every now and then, we see two movies that are being made at roughly the same time which are about virtually the same subject matter. Looking at movies such as Armageddon with Deep Impact, White House Down with Olympus has fallen, one pair was about a mankind killing asteroid and the other is where the White House is under siege. It’s happening again right now with the two in-production Jungle Book adaptations . There seems to be a need to tell the same story twice.

Jobs (2013) and Steve Jobs (2015) are both about the founding member of Apple, both tell the story in their own unique ways. Why two movies were being made is anyone’s guess. The former starred Ashton Kutcher and the latter stars Michael Fassbender as the man himself, it’s directed by Danny Boyle and written by Aaron Sorkin. On paper, putting these three together should equal in a cinematic masterpiece, and it pretty much has.

Steve Jobs tells the story from the release of the first Macintosh all the way up to the launch of the iMac, the computer which brought Apple back from the brink of bankruptcy. While some may think this is yet another feature length advert for Apple, it doesn’t come off as that at all. What this film does is show you all sides of Steve Jobs ranging from colleague, father, inventor, showman, all portrayed effortlessly by Fassbender. The film is cut into three acts, all taking place at a product launch, be that with Apple or the company he founded after being forced out, NeXT. From 1984 to 1998, we see his relationships change, grow, evolve and dissolve. These launches were the first Macintosh, then his next venture NeXt (perfect black cube) and then his return to Apple where he sends the iMac out into the world.

Danny Boyle is someone you can ordinarily rely on to put some grit into his film, something that’s normally hard to watch however it’s not like that at all. It doesn’t feel like a Boyle film at all but that’s not a bad thing. He’s never had a script like this before, one which is so dialogue heavy that through speech is where you see the tension, drama and action. With Boyle’s films, these are usually done with stunning visual aids but what we get here are people walking and talking, quite a bit, yet it works. Boyle has directed one of his finest films yet due to its simplicity of mostly taking place backstage with a handful of people. The complexity of his movie is in just how simple these scenes are.

A sharp Sorkin script ensures that this is full of witty memorable lines, long conversations and brilliant put-downs. In a scene with Seth Rogen’s Steve Wozniak, Jobs is asked what it is he does. “Musicians play their instruments. I play the orchestra.” Just one example of how highly regarded Steve Jobs is to Steve Jobs. Sorkin has created dialogue that is inviting to listen to and fascinating to see performed. This isn’t the first time he has tackled a tech genius. The Social Network was yet another example of his work that was well received thanks to his snappy lines. The thought of a film about Facebook and then another about a man who started a computer company don’t sound like they would be the most riveting views but Sorkin can create a script that actors will love to work with and speeches audiences will enjoy.

This is a fast-talking, dialogue driven film that only slightly dumbs down the technical computer lingo in order to have several sharp scenes in which they can discuss these issues in length without the audience furrowing their brows, wondering what’s going on. The movie cleverly bounces from the product launches to key moments in his life using flashbacks such as working in his garage, his sacking from Apple and asking John Sculley (Jeff Daniels) to be CEO of Apple. Steve Jobs was a man who pushed forward in tech world with his ideas and foresight but this is not a celebration of a man, this is showing a man at his best and his worst, seeing what he’s like with key people in his life. If you thought you knew Steve Jobs, think again.

My 100th Post

This is my 100th blog post. It’s been a long road to get to this point but I think it’s been worth it. Recently I’ve started to follow more and more bloggers on WordPress as well as Twitter and it’s one hell of a community. There are some really wonderful film blogs out there, some very alternative ones, some interesting mainstream ones, those which cover classic films, the ones who love the indies. I have done a lot too, been to so many things, events, cinemas, just had a great time since I started this blog. I’ve been to the London Film Festival twice (first time getting to meet Marion Cotillard and then meeting Ralph Fiennes), visited the brilliant and gorgeous Aubin Cinema, returned to the IMAX twice in one year (once for the Dark Knight Rises and once for Gravity), finally made it to the Rooftop Cinema Club in Shoreditch, been to the Harry Potter World at the Warner Brother Studios in Watford, watched countless films, bought countless DVDs (my collection recently surpassed 400), went to my very first film marathon at the Prince Charles Cinema, went to the awful Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad, got to go to the James Bond in Motion exhibition, Sundance London’s first and second year and the VFX Festival which I didn’t even know existed until a few weeks before I went.  Here’s a few photos from the past two years

For this post, I wanted to include something a bit random and special. Vue Cinemas have kindly provided me with a link to this make-up tutorial to create a high street look similar to that of Angelina Jolie’s in Disney’s new film, Maleficent. A really good video tutorial with the talented Marcos Gurgel who has worked on several diverse projects including The Voice, Strictly Come Dancing, and on titles such as Radio Times, Sunday Times and OK! magazine. He has recently worked on shows during London and Paris Fashion weeks. Have a look below

I also wanted to include a few other images which I’ve seen recently, it’s a mix of all odds and sods, some new films, posters, random images of actors and the Batman exhibition opening in LA. Fingers crossed they bring that here.

As for the future of this blog, don’t worry this isn’t where I will sign off for good. In fact not a tall. I’ve got plenty of ideas coming up including an online film festival, visiting more unusual cinemas, going to more film festivals in London and around the country, interviews with those who are up and coming in the movie industry, once again staying up for the Oscars and just so much more I don’t want to tell you about just yet!

Zombie lovin’

Vampires are cool. Vampires are popular. Vampires are hip. Vampires are sexy. I do think we have had enough of these neck-loving fiends. From recent shows such as Vampire Diaries and True Blood to the relatively current Twilight series, there’s a lot of vamps and blood to go around. When it comes to the Twilight films, despite having a supposedly sexy cast, these were a critical flop but a box office smash due to teen girls (and boys) going to watch the pale and pasty Robert Pattinson. It goes to show no matter how attractive or popular your cast and books may be, this can’t guarantee a film or TV show will be remembered for the right reasons. There is something about the slick, smooth and sexy ways to the vampire genre (can you call it a genre??) that feels forced and lazy. No real effort into the “what if this really happened”.

Scariest Monster Zombie

This is not the case when it comes to zombies. I must admit that they do all have the post-apocalyptic feel to them but so they should. The world is no longer what we once knew it was, people have changed, places are abandoned and flesh is being eaten. However, they do deal with problems that come with being on the road with people you don’t know, sticking by your family ring in the gritty, dirty undead of zombies. Zombies are, in their own way, more relatable than vampires. These are essentially former humans who like almost as they used to but everything else that made them who they were has gone. They all have a story that they can no longer tell.

Despite the fact that one of the most popular zombie movies came out in 2002 (28 Days Later) it’s taken until now for a big budget movie to be released. World War Z is the first of what I assume will be many made about the undead, it takes the post-apocalyptic world and uses a family man (Brad Pitt) to tell it’s story. It’s great to see a big star on a big set for what hasn’t been the most popular of genres. It comes as the Walking Dead is entering it’s fourth season this year, a show that has been a proven success with both fans and critics alike. And which will likely continue it’s streak of superb episodes that involve not only conflicts with zombies but also other survivors.

Those sorts of mediums have taken the serious storyline route whereas that’s not all we have in this increasingly popular franchise. What I must say is one of my favourite films has done is combine violence and humour so perfectly, you’ll find yourself howling to a piano falling on and squashing one of these so-called death knights. Zombieland came out at a time when there really wasn’t very much about them and it was just fantastic to watch. Columbus’ (Jesse Eisenberg) friendship with Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) has the makings of a great buddy comedy but with zombies, Bill Murray and two double crossing girls. The rules for survival, Tallahassee being an unadjusted nut case (something tells me he’s always been like this, even before the apocalypse), the never-ending search for elusive and potentially non-existent Twinkies and (sort of) snappy one liners (Tallahassee: “Here’s the deal: I’m not easy to get along with, and I’m sensing you’re a bit of a bitch.”), it brings the zombie genre out of it’s typical serious shell.

As does Warm Bodies starring Nicholas Hoult. I always find it hard to believe that he was ever the little kid from About A Boy, let that sink in… Anyway! This is another ZomCom (I probably heard that elsewhere but I’m going to claim that as my own little phrase. Zombie Comedy, yeah) in which “R” played by Hoult is part of the undead population, but saves a girl who is live from being eaten. It’s in fact a ZomRomCom. OK I think THAT one is Simon Pegg’s for Shaun of the Dead, another example of a Zombie Comedy, but with a British twist. Warm Bodies is yet another clever genre twist in that the undead start to heal themselves but are still hunted down by the ever-brilliant John Makovich.

With Shaun of the Dead bringing in some home grown talent and British humour into the zombie wasteland, I would say that this is one hell of a genre! It does baffle me that the vampires get all of the attention, perhaps it’s appealing to the young  masses by having primarily very attractive people in them because let’s be honest, zombies aren’t the most attractive of people. They do look like they have been physically dug up at some point and set to roam around free. Whatever the reason, it looks like zombies are finally getting the attention they deserve and the genre doesn’t look like it’s about to die at any moment soon.
